For my birthday, Chris surprised me with a wide angle lens for my camera, and then treated me to a day of free photo taking. This meant that we while at the islands in Boston Harbor, I was allowed to spend as much time taking photos as I wanted without feeling guilty for holding him up (he knows me too well).

While I don't think that any of these photos were actually taken with the wide angle, many more have been, and it. is. amazing. It takes great landscape photos, and will be a wonderful asset when we're honeymooning in China next month!

I thought it also might be fitting to show some Boston photos as the Stanley Cup final game 7 starts in just over an hour. Chris and his family are huge Bruins fans, so they've been my adopted team this year, and I'm rooting for them tonight :)

In the past week, I defended my Master's thesis, packed up my apartment in Toronto and moved back to Halifax. I spent the weekend catching up with friends and family, and hopefully now I will have some time to get around to taking more photos, and posting older photos that I've already taken.

These few photos are from my trip to Boston when we spent a couple of hours on a beautiful beach in Provincetown. The weather in Halifax is cold and rainy, so I'm hoping more of these days are not too far away!

Well friends, it's Friday!

Looks like we made it through another week! In Toronto we ended up getting an unexpected beautiful day - instead of the rain and thundershowers that was predicted, we enjoyed the sun and a high of 29.

I spent the morning at the Travel Clinic getting vaccines and medication for my trip to China this summer, and then spent the afternoon sorting out some thesis paperwork, photographing and enjoying a delicious frozen caffeinated beverage in the sun.

It looks like the rest of the weekend might be a bit more dismal, but I'm planning to get together with some friends, so that should make up for it :)

cheltenham badlands

Yesterday I went for a hike near the Cheltenham Badlands, just northwest of Toronto. It looked like it was going to be a nice sunny day, but as we moved out of the city, the clouds came around. I actually wasn't too disappointed about this as I sometimes I prefer the drama of clouds to clear blue sky in photos, although I may have been the only one feeling this way...

The hike we took was suggested by TorontoHiking.com. It started off at the badlands and then took us along some country roads and paths for around 10km or so. A few kilometers in, we came across some old dilapidated houses which of course I had fun photographing - but I will save those photos for later this week!

pesto & feta pizza

Yesterday was a great day for food, chez moi. For brunch, I made an omelette with feta, basil and different veggies (...and then made a second one when I wasn't full after the first!) and then I made a pizza with homemade pesto, feta, red onion, tomatoes and mushrooms for supper.

I really love trying to make everything from scratch, especially with ingredients from the market. Since it's gotten warmer, I've been hitting up Kensington Market and Chinatown a fair bit lately - not only is the produce/dairy/etc quite cheap (I found a giant bunch of basil for $1!), but it's so fun to spend the day wandering around different speciality stores :)

I think I may go make another pizza for supper (since I only used half the dough last night)...perhaps this will be a two-parter?

Last weekend I went to High Park for a picnic with my adopted TO family. We were hoping to see some cherry blossoms, but it turned out that they're a little bit late this year. Instead, we enjoyed a sushi picnic and walked around the park until we found a patch of grass where we could relax and people watch.

Well, it looks like spring is here!

Nicole and I spent the beautiful sunny day walking around looking for interesting things to photograph. These were taken at a little flower shop in the distillery district while we were waiting for a table at the Mill Street Brewery Pub.

Well! It has been a while since I've posted anything...sorry about that. I went to San Francisco in the beginning of the month, and then things got a bit crazy with my thesis and wedding planning since I got back. Anyway, hopefully I will be able to post a little more regularly in the coming weeks, although I'm still trying to track down my SD card reader, so I may need to rely on archived photos for a while yet.

These were taken while in San Fran, on my walk from the Golden Gate Bridge back to the city. It is such a beautiful city, and the weather was so nice...I miss it!

I have a thing for simple desktop photos. I really love the activity of picking a new one (or two, so that I can have complementary photos on my two screens) every couple of weeks.

More often than not, my desktop photos come from photographer John Carey over at fiftyfoodshadows. I'm sure I've gushed about his photos on here before, but if you haven't seen his stuff, I'd highly recommend checking it out. Some of my favourites are here, here, and here.

Anyway, on my way back from the library this afternoon, I noticed these ex-plants against the blue-grey water and thought it might make a decent desktop photo.

I know, I know - finally some non-food photos taken outside in daylight!

Spring seems to be arriving to Toronto very slowly, so I jumped at the chance to get outside when the sun came out this afternoon. I wandered around campus for a while before coming to this wooded area. I really liked all the tones and colours, so I made use of my gorillapod and a nicely positioned tree to get some photos of myself.

I didn't explicitly think about it at the time, but looking at these photos they remind me a little bit of the personal style blog, FrouFrouu. I've been loving the warm, muted colours in her photos lately and it looks like they might have snuck in here.

I took my Saturday off yesterday to run some errands, and ended up having a nice (and reasonably productive) day! I bought some (very) thrifty clothes, spent more money than I'd like to admit on ribbon for wedding invitations, and had an unexpected coffee date with Erin. Then, Erin and Matt came up to my place for dinner, and I tried a new maple salmon recipe. It turned out really well, so of course I documented the dinner, and bookmarked the recipe (it's here in case you want to try it too!)

I took these while on the bus between Buffalo and Toronto on Monday. I was pretty tired by this point and was just trying to find a way to pass the time (I'm not a great vehicle sleeper).

When I was editing these, they kind of reminded me of some old family photos that my grandparents had. So, I tried converting them all to black and white and ended up liking them a bit better. It really makes me want to take out my film camera soon!

Last night I (reluctantly) returned to Toronto from my extended reading week in Boston. I took a few photos on my plane/bus trip back, but I've been meaning to post these since I took them on Friday, so here they are!

These were taken in a really cool building in Boston. This particular room was quite big and industrial, so I had some fun jumping around for an hour or so. It would have been nice if I could have fit my flash stand and umbrella in my suitcase - but I tried to make good use of the harshness of the flash by itself in this space.

Today Chris and I went to a little Mexican place in Cambridge called Olecito, for dinner. We had some sort of delicious sandwich along with some chips and fresh guacamole. It would have been nice if they had a bit more seating, but I really can't complain.

These are some photos of the various stages of my snack time yesterday that included a latte and freshly made chocolate chip cookies. I had been off coffee earlier this year, but it turns out that it's is a very difficult habit to kick as a ~~grad student~~ human. Especially when coffee and related beverages are sooo delicious, and they complement cookies (and an assortment of other sweets) so very well.

I took most of these these photos with the flash mounted to my camera and bounced off the ceiling (oh to have a kitchen with natural light!) The second photo was taken using my faux macro lens (fairly inexpensive 10X magnifying filter) that I had accidentally left down here in August. I know it's not nearly as good as a real macro lens, but I am nowhere near being able to afford one, and I am very happy to have this one back in my hands.

Snowy Night

In an effort to be more productive, I put myself on a photo diet in the days leading up to the deadline for a review paper I've been working on. Finally, very early Sunday morning, I finished it (more or less). To celebrate my temporary freedom, Chris and I took a walk to get some deliciously greasy fast food. Much to our dismay, McDonalds had just closed (why aren't all McDonalds 24h!?), but it was still nice to get outside and take these photos of the freshly fallen snow.

I've been considering trying to get on some sort of schedule, maybe posting M/W/F or something similar. Posting every day seems a little ambitions, but it's still nice to have the structure.

We shall see though. I'm always open to suggestions :)

On our way to the dumpling making session on Sunday, I made Chris wait for me while I took some photos of the Charles River. I really loved the look of the pedestrian bridge and the icy river in the glorious late afternoon light (I have a pretty big thing for pre-dusk sun). It was quite cold old, but even still, you could smell spring in the air. Moments like this make me wonder if I could really ever handle living somewhere that didn't have such distinct seasons...but then we have a cold snap and I very quickly think I could deal with yearlong warm weather.

Dumpling Lesson

For our honeymoon this summer, Chris and I are planning on taking a month or so to backpack around China. In preparation, we've been reading up on Chinese history and culture, and have become really interested in making (or at least trying!) authentic Chinese food. So, last night one of Chris' labmates and his wife generously had us over for a dumpling making session. We made three different types of filling for the dumplings, and they made three extra dishes to go with them. Everything was so fresh and delicious, although I think I'm going to have to use chopsticks for everything I eat between now and July if I want to avoid making a fool of myself when we get over there!

Last night I made up some whole wheat bread, but had ~~some~~ enormous difficulty getting it out of the pan. After a night of soaking and a second try this afternoon with a completely greased pan, I ended up with this. Much better!

It's always interesting to see how different the photo you envision is from the photo you end up with. Sometimes, things work out and you end up getting something that is exactly what you had in mind (e.g. this one), but often it doesn't seem to work out this way. Perhaps this is something that will come with experience, or maybe it's just better to not to be too attached to any one idea.

This is one of the shots I took while getting this photo. I had planned on using a hairdryer to get all of these shots, but ended up choosing one of the only photos I took without one for Day 363. This is more what I had in mind originally.

So, it turns out, without committing to taking a photo each day it's hard to find time to take photos. I really miss it, and I think I'm actually going a little crazy not having it to look forward to. So I'm going to try to be better. At the very least, I'll try to regularly post photos I took during my 365 that didn't make the cut the first time.

I took this photo last month when I went out photo-hunting with Kyle around Halifax. He's still early on in his 365, and the photos are looking great! You should definitely all check out his blog :)

It's hard to believe it but...

I MADE IT!

The days often passed slowly, but looking back the time has flown, in no small part to my newfound love of photography and this photo-a-day challenge. Last February, I started off here and had originally planned on doing a "334 day challenge" so that I would finish with many of the other 365ers at the end of the calendar year. However, somewhere along I decided to go the full 365, and I'm so glad I did, as I feel that some of my best photos have come from the past thirty days.

Of course I probably wouldn't have finished this project had it not been for many people around me.

So I'd like to thank:

my mom, for passing on her love of photos to me;

my friends and family, for their encouragement, patience :) and support;

anyone who has commented on my photos here, on facebook, flickr, google buzz or in person;

...and of course, my wonderful prehusband, Chris (soonish to be real husband!) for always giving me honest feedback, and for everything else :)

To anyone out there considering taking up photography and doing a 365 of their own: do it! Yes, it will take up a some time, yes, you will miss days here and there, and yes there will be times when you hate most of your photos, but the growth you see over the year will be worth it. Promise.

So what now?

As much as I feel like it right now, I will not be continuing on for a second year. I need to take some time to:

a) focus on, and finish my degree,

b) take photos that I'm inspired to take, and

c) decide what role photography will play in my life.

I will still post here regularly though, so stay tuned!

Day 353: My Roots

Today I embraced both winter and my English heritage and made a delicious stew for supper. I've always loved this stew (my Mom made it growing up) but I think I like it even more now that I've started cooking it myself and have realized just how simple it is to make. You pretty much just boil carrots, turnip, potatoes, onion and beef (and biscuit related ingredients for the dumplings) and end up with a super yummy dinner.

This afternoon Nicole and I explored the Distillery District here in Toronto. As I mentioned in the last post, it was pretty cold out, but we had a good time taking photos of the historic buildings and eating the most delicious chocolate of our lives at the cafe at Soma Chocolatemaker. Somewhere along the line I must have missed a few days, because as I'm nearing the end of my year of photos I'm realizing that if we go off of the number I'm at now, I won't be finished until February 3rd. To make up for lost time, I'll try to update a couple of extra days.

This is a photo of my lunch today: a parsley, almond and quinoa salad, which is a recipe I found in a cookbook by Jules Clancy over at Stonesoup. She creates delicious minimalist meals which usually have less than 5 ingredients and taken under 10 minutes to make. This one was particularly tasty, and I highly recommend checking out her site (her recommendation of putting ricotta cheese in scrambled eggs changed my life for the better!)

I went for a walk in the Camp Hill Cemetery in Halifax, which is where Alexander Keith is buried. I was hoping to get a good one of his tombstone, but this one turned out better.

I arrived back in Halifax last Wednesday, and hit up my favourite coffee shop (Just Us! Coffee) very soon after landing.
